Along with the upasarga (prefix) ava, this root forms the word अवतंस (avataṃsa), which means, ‘adornment’, ‘gem’, ‘jewel’, or generically anything used to adorn and decorate. For instance, śirovataṃsa is ‘crest jewel’, karṇāvataṃsa is ‘ear-jewel’, or a necklace or a garland, etc.

In the word in question, the word avataṃsa is used as an adjective for the word kṣatriyakulā (ruling clan, the class of kings).
